Insurance Europe’s Reinsurance Advisory Board (RAB) has confirmed the appointment of Gen Re chairman, Charlie Shamieh, as its new chair.

He has become chair with immediate effect following the death of SCOR chairman, Denis Kessler, who had held the position since September 2021.

Shamieh, who had been appointed vice-chair of the RAB earlier this year, has more than 37 years of experience in the life and health and property amd casualty insurance and reinsurance industries in the US, Europe and Australasia.

Commenting on his appointment, Shamieh said: “The reinsurance industry continues to face numerous challenges in 2023, despite its 177-year history. I am honoured to have been chosen by my fellow reinsurance industry leaders to continue to lead the RAB in confronting today’s issues following the passing of our friend and legendary industry figure Denis Kessler.

“My colleagues and I remain dedicated to Denis’ passion and vision of the industry’s role in protecting societies and enabling sustainable economic growth and development.”

Insurance Europe’s RAB aims to stimulate and maintain a “stable, innovative and competitive” reinsurance market environment by promoting regulatory frameworks that facilitate global risk transfer through reinsurance and other insurance-linked capital solutions.

It is represented at chairman and CEO level by seven major reinsurers, which are Gen Re, Hannover Re, Lloyd’s of London, Munich Re, PartnerRe, SCOR and Swiss Re, with Insurance Europe providing the secretariat.
