Gothaer invested €400m in impact investments last year, insurer reveals

Gothaer has revealed it invested €400m in thematic and impact investments last year, including US$100m into the Natural Capital Fund.

The German insurer has published a new sustainability report for its activity in 2022, stating that climate change is becoming increasingly noticeable and requires “immediate action by the global community”.

Gothaer’s executive board and representatives from sustainability management and corporate development regularly have reviewed the progress made in implementing its sustainability strategy in a newly founded ESG board to ensure more transparency and responsibility in the implementation.

The insurer said the topic of sustainability “permeates all areas of the group” and covers all aspects of ESG.

Gothaer’s sustainability report was written in addition to the DNK declaration in order to present its sustainable activities in full. It has detailed the development in the insurer’s core business and capital investments and also provides interviews and background stories with a deeper insight into the implementation of the group’s wider sustainability strategy.

“Climate change is probably the greatest challenge of this generation,” said Gothaer CEO, Oliver Schoeller. “Insurers have a significant influence on whether the climate change can succeed in society and the economy.

“Gothaer has established itself as one of the leading sustainability insurers. We will continue to improve our own footprint and continue to expand our support for the success of the transformation through investments and in the insurance business.

“The drivers of this strategy are the employees. They see themselves as entrepreneurs in this task. This power of community makes us so effective in this social task.

CFO at Gothaer, Harald Epple, who is also responsible for sustainability in the group, added:
“For us as an insurer, our core business and our investments have the greatest impact on sustainability. Through responsible capital investments and insurance solutions, we can make an important contribution to a sustainable future and help our customers to bear new risks.

“The expansion of renewable energies plays an important role. We think of renewable energies in a European way and invest in solar and wind parks.”
