US insurers invested US$34.4bn in ETFs as of year-end 2023, as large outflows from large insurers were witnessed for the second year in a row, latest figures from S&P Dow Jones Indices have shown.

In 2022, the bear market exacerbated the outflows to decrease ETF AuM by 23%, and in 2023, the market acted against the outflows and AuM only decreased by 6%.

Small and medium-sized companies have continued to increase their use of ETFs.

In the overall US ETF market at the end of 2023, equities made up 79% of all ETF AuM.
