US PRT activity hits all-time high for first half of a year

The US pension risk transfer (PRT) market saw its highest-ever volume of premium and number of transactions place in the first half of 2023, with $6.3bn placed in Q1 and $16.1bn placed in Q2, according to figures published by Aon.

There were at least 289 transactions totalling $22.4bn in premium in H1 2023.

Buy-in solutions, accounting for $1.6bn in premium placed across six transactions during H1 2023, remain a niche solution at the larger end of the market, the report stated.

Furthermore, Aon itself advised on roughly two-thirds of PRT premium dollars placed in H1 2023.
