(Re)insurers in the European Economic Area (EEA) held roughly €7.9trn in securities like government bonds, corporate bonds and equity at the end of 2025, with 72.1% of this holding staying on the continent, new data published by EIOPA has revealed.

Home-bound investments account for 38.2% of securities holdings, while a further 33.9% is invested elsewhere in the EEA.

Just over a quarter (27.9%) is invested in the rest of the world, with US securities making up about half of these external holdings, with a strong allocation to equities.

Total investments by EEA insurers amounted to €9.9trn in 2025.
