Mafia targets German insurers causing losses of up to €5bn

Written by Adam Cadle

German insurers are incurring losses of up to €5bn every year due to insurance fraud committed by the Calabrian mafia, according to the German trade body, GDV.

Mafia offenses often include insurance fraud.

“As early as the 1980S, criminals from the strongholds of the Mafia in Calabria and Sicily also obtained a significant source of revenue from insurance companies,” Wolfgang Rahm, a mafia expert at the State Criminal Police Office in Stuttgart said.

Peter Holmstoel of the GDV said the problem is that you have to prove the fraud “which is very difficult in practice”.

“The perpetrators are absolute professionals.”
